'HE EUROPEAN Commission as come out against proposals or reducing maximum speed mits or standardising the highway codes in the ten member ountries.
In an answer to a written queson from MEP Olaf Schwenke Nest Germany), the Commision says the idea of lower peed limits in Europe is not iopular with governments.
Mr Schwenke claimed that [ridings in the US (where there 3 a 55mph limit for cars) howed that low limits reduced Jel consumption and cut the ccident rate, but the Commision remained unconvinced and aid that the evidence from the IS was inconclusive.
Within the EEC there had been xpert studies into the influence if speed limits on petrol conumption, but the results were lot sufficiently encouraging for le Commission to put forward iroposals.
The possibility of harmonising raffic laws was also raised by /IEP William Newton Dunn -nember for Lincolnshire).
The Commission says studies ave been made by several inarnational besides such as the )ECD, but it does not envisage flaking any proposals.
