THE . applicant's main witn.ess,
• Remploy, Ltd., withdrew support for a "contract conversion" at the third hearing in Liverpool, on Tuesday, of the application by Mr.. J. R. Entwistle, Wigan, to add five vehicles (21 tons each) to his A licence.
Following reports concerning Remploy's policy which had appeared in the Press (The Conimercial Motor, April 5), Col. C. Erlund, national transport controller, attended the inquiry. The evidence of Mr. R. J. Brown, Remploy's northern transport officer, was, said Col. Eriund, incorrect concerning any movement from contract-A to public A licences. Mr. Brown had confused local With national policy, which was simply to get the lowest possible rates.
Remploy were not interested in Mr. Entwistle's attempt to convert contratt-A licences into A licences and they would no longer support the application. Generally, Remploy' were able to back-load their contract-A vehicles. Where contract work was uneconomic, they preferred to use their own vehicles.
Mr. J. R. Lindsay, North Western Deputy Licensing Authority, refused the application.
