AA UNIFORM annual holiday for the Heavy Woollen District would mean that the Yorkshire Woollen District Transport Co.. Ltd., would need about 330 vehicles. The company's general manager, Mr. G. W. Battensby, pointed this out when uniform holiday proposals were discussed by transport operators, chambers of trade and commerce, and other representatives in .Batley.
He explained that he did not want to throw cold water over any scheme which would benefit the workers, but he could not sec where the extra buses could be obtained.
Batley and Birstall Chamber of Commerce had decided that the two best fortnights for such a holiday were the first two weeks in.July or the last two in August. To this, Mr. Battensby said that last Dewsbury Feast, the companyran 110 vehicles, 39 of which had to be hired. At Batley and Birstall Feast they ran 118 vehicles, 42 of which had to be hired. At the Spen Valley holiday, a further 90 vehicles were used.
It was difficult to hire more than 50 vehicles from companies within a radius of 25 miles.
If they could get authority to run two Saturday trips to the coast instead of one, twice as many people would be able to be moved as 'compared with last year.
Maj. F. S. Eastwood, chairman of the Yorkshire Traffic Commissioners, said he had heard many applications recently for licences to run coaches on Friday evenings.
The meeting was adjourned so that the views of education authorities and workers could he obtained.
