Research during the past three years indicated that the use of castor oil improved fuel-consumption rates by
2-3 per cent. Castor oil's tendency to gum had been overcome by a new antioxidation inhibitor, an L.T.E. spokesman said on Tuesday, and its higher cost compared with mineral oil would be offset by fuel savings.
He added that tests were also being made with a synthetic oil, the long-term performance of which had still to be determined.
