Tractive Unit for Shell-Mex -
A RECENT delivery to Shell-Mex and ri BY., Ltd., has been a 3,700-gal. articulated fuel-oil tanker with A.E.C. Mandator tractive unit and Steel Barrel tank semi-trailer. This outfit, as can be seen from the accompanying illustration, is finished in the company's smart new livery of white, yellow and grey. The entry of this vehicle into the Shell-Mex and B.P. fleet is significant in that the tractive unit is completely interchangeVle with the existing maximum-capacity bulk articulated tankers already in use, most of which have Scat-melt semi-fixed coupling gear.
The Mandator tractive unit has an A.E.C. AV 690 diesel engine, six-speed overdrive-top gearbox and 6.25-to-1 double-reduction rear axle. The chassis is fitted with Tecalemit Syndromic automatic lubrication and a single-directional power take-off which drives a Reavell FRU 5.25 a 8 rotary compressor.
The tank is constructed as a pressure vessel from 28/32-ton boiler-quality plate and provides for air-pressure discharge at 35 p.s.i. It has two equal compartments and is equipped with pressure and relief valves. Outflow is controlled by 3-in. Worcester valves, the outflow pipes being manifolded and conducted to the rear of the tank, with the delivery hose permanently attached to a 3-in. swivel. The semi-trailer is equipped with a selfcontained Tecalemit Midget Brentford lubricator set.
