ANEW design of ambulance based on a Bedford normal-control, 25-cwt. chassis is now in quantity production by Holmes (Preston), Ltd.
Aluminium alloy is used for the body framing and for most of the exterior panelling—the roof and rear corners are of reinforced plastics and 'the front end is a standard Bedford unit. The body interior is fully lined with plastics mouldings and the rear two of the three windows on both sides incorporate ventilators.
Interior equipment includes wheeldown stretcher gear with automatic stops for the up and down positions operated by a pull knob, and a bench scat for four sitting patients (five with the armrests up). The scat back-rest can be folded down to take a second stretcher. An additional patient's seat is positioned adjacent to the bulkhead on the offside and at the opposite side is a seat for the nurse or attendant. Saloon heating is provided by a 4.5-kW. fresh-air heater which discharges through a grille at floor level. Double-drop-down rear steps arc incorporated.
The cab is of conventional layout and access is by jack-knife doors. Spare wheel, hydraulic jack and other equipment are housed in a locker beneath the saloon floor accessible from the nearside of the vehicle.
