• In response to concern expressed that there was no sign of the urgent transport investment decisions which were needed over the next two years, Mr Michael Heseltine, Parliamentary Under-Secretary, DoE, told a deputation headed by Mr I. M. Corfin, chairman of the London Passenger Action Confederation, that he appreciated their concern. It was this very concern which had led the Government to initiate its inquiries into urban and rural transport, he said.
Mr Heseltine added that he was personally investigating the urban transport problem in depth and talks were going on with some local authorities to help the Government in its inquiry into the overall problems and to decide what changes, if any, were necessary in the processes leading to investment decisions.
