AN increase of 9s. a .week in the wages of all adult road haulage workers within a 15-mile radius of Belfast and Londonderry city has been suggested by the Northern Ireland Road Haulage Wages Council. Other workers in Ulster may receive an extra 5s. a week.
It is also proposed to introduce a new category for drivers of vehicles of over 8 tons carrying capacity. The council's suggestions affect 18,000 workers.
The case for an improvement in pay was put forward by the Amalgamated Transport and General Workers' Union, and if there are no objections within 21 days, the council's proposals will be approved by the Minister of Labour.
Belfast drivers of vehicles of 2 tons and over will then receive £8 2s. 6d. a week, and those in the new category, £8 10s. Londonderry city wage scales will be slightly lower, but above those for drivers in the rest 'of Ulster.
