• Mr John Peyton, Minister for Transport Industries, rejected demands in the Commons on Wednesday for a White Paper on the Government's long-term transport policy.
"There is co-ordinated transport policy but I do not think a White Paper is necessary," he told MPs.
He said the whole question of the role of the railways was being reviewed and the scope for the transfer of the carriage of goods from road to rail was under "very extensive examination".
