• An operation involving the carriage by road of 160,000 tons annually of limestone is being switched entirely to rail as one result of a 10-year contract signed by British Railways, in conjunction with Quickmix Concrete Ltd., and Imperial Chemical Industries Ltd.
Hitherto the limestone has been road hauled from an ICI quarry at Tunstead, near Buxton, to a former goods yard at Dean Lane, Manchester. leased by BR to Quickmix Concrete. A new rail-road depot for concrete manufacturing and storage is being provided, with two new sidings and mechanical unloading equipment. As the output from this plant rises, BR expects to increase to 250,000 tons annually the amount of stone carried from the Tunstead quarry.
