Drivers and conductors from the Northern General Transport Co. Ltd. depot at Washington, Co. Durham, are taking karate lessons to arm themselves against the increasing incidence of late-night attacks on them by hooligans.
Some 30 of them have signed on for a series of 12 lessons in the ancient Japanese art of barehand fighting with Ray Coates who runs a training school in the town and who has agreed to take a class every Sunday afternoon at a specially reduced fee of £2 1 Os per person The men and women—two clippies attended the first class—will be paying the fees themselves, George Marshall, the first volunteer to take part in a demonstration, told CM. He said he had already had inquiries from other NOT depots.
