at the end of February last covering goods vehicles, general haulage and showmen's tractors and hackneys was 1,037,900, as compared with. 1,069,800 on November 30, 1952. Although the figure for trams is dropping, there were still 3,000 licensed at the end of February.
Hackneys, other than trams, with more than eight seats, numbered 71,000. Goods vehicles totalled 921,800, of which 17,900 were electric, 100 driven by steam or gas, 40,500 were farmers' vehicles, 800 showmen's and 1,900 were owned by local authorities. " Other " goods vehicles numbered 860,600.
