BIRMINGHAM transporter and car delivery drivers on Saturday settled for an additional £3.50 on basic pay rates with an extra £2.98 cash payment. This averted a strike which was due to start at midnight on Sunday and would have thrown thousands of car workers — mostly fellow members of the TGWU — out of work.
The dispute centred on a clause in the agreement allowing renegotiation if the cost of living rose above a certain figure related to last May.
It is understood that the agreement was arrived at in the light of many critical factors now affecting the car industry — British Leyland in particular — and of the Prime Minister's speech warning that industrial action threatened the success of Government intervention in ailing companies.
