THE West Midland deputy Licensing
Authority, Mr. R. Hall, was told on Tuesday that a future increase in goods being carried to London Airport would necessitate a firm's " mini-buses " being supplemented by a goods vehicle.
Roy Bowles, Hounslow, Middlesex, trading as Roy Bowles Transport Ltd., was applying for a B licence for one 21-ton lorry to collect air freight within 25 miles of Birmingham and Leicester for delivery to London Airport for Air Express International Corporation.
Mr. Bowles said that 99/15 per cent of the company's revenue came from air freight from Birmingham and Leicester to London Airport. This, in itself, did not present such great difficulties, but it meant taking the mini-buses off other work in the London area. He thought a commercial vehicle could keep to the strict timing needed on the trips.
The capacity of the mini-buses, he continued, was only ton whereas the commercial vehicle he intended to use would enable him to carry a 2i-ton load.
Mr. Desmond Green, Midland area manager for Air Express International, said that the company was not entirely satisfied with the services that it got from Bowles Transport Ltd. While the applicant did the best it could with its resources, Bowles often had difficulty getting loads into the present vehicles. The loads to be carried were likely to get bigger, and therefore The applicant was going to need bigger vehicles.
Mr. Green said that his company had tried other services, but there had been delivery delays.
As Mr. Bowles had a vehicle going to London every day he was in a position to take the goods and make sure they reached the airport in plenty of time. Late deliveries could also be catered for by the firm.
The hearing was being continued today, Friday. •
