rr HE first of three van semi' trailers for bulk grain transport has recently been delivered by the York Trailer Co. Ltd. to John Russell of Bathgate Ltd. The units are a development of the York Freightmaster with exterior vertical side posts and are designed for three methods of operation: carrying bulk grain, loaded through apertures in the roof and discharged through hoppers in the floor, carrying grain in sacks or carrying normal freight.
Alterations made to the standard Freightmaster design include the mounting of the side posts at lit. centres instead of 2 ft. and internal trussing of the roof which incorporates two 2 ft. 6 in. by 6 ft. load ing apertures and catwalks for access. Three discharge hoppers are mounted beneath the floor— two in front of the running gear, the third at the extreme rear—these having light alloy grilles above them lying flush with the body floor. A small hatch is built into the front end of the body for loading by hose and there is a full height side door at the nearside. The rear is closed by a drop tailboard with hinged doors above.
Capacity of the semi-trailers for John Russell is 1,800 Cu. ft. and the floor area is 208 sq. ft. Load capacity is 15 tons, the bodies being mounted on tandem-axle running gear.
