THE first trichloroethylene-thinned paint to be sold in Britain has been introduced by I.C.I. Paints Division and is being marketed under the trade description of Tr-borne Stoving Finish Black
F105-55. It is a high-gloss one-coat dipping paint based on synthetic resins dissolved in trichloroethylene. The product is allied to the Trilac process of protective resin coatings for metal, developed and recently introduced by General Chemicals Division.
Trichloroethylene, used as a paint solvent, has qualities which it is said may herald a revolution in industrial finishing methods. It evaporates so quickly that articles treated with the new paint are drip-free within one minute and can be handled within two minutes of leaving the dip tank. No separate draining stage is needed, there is no paint wastage and the article can be stoved at once. Exceptionally good flow and remarkable freedom from runs and tears are claimed. together with adequate film thickness on sharp edges, eliminating the need for more than one coat.
