THE blocking of the fast lane on motor). ways by slow, overtaking vehicles was condemned " unreservedly " by Mr. Marples this week. The practice was, he said, bad driving and dangerous.
But when Mr. Julian Critchley (Tory, Rochester and Chatham) asked for regulations to prevent lorries from using the third or fast lane to overtake slowermoving vehicles Mr. Marples said lorry drivers were not the only offenders.
He was not at present satisfied that the best way to improve matters was by regulations, although he would keep this idea under review, added the Minister. Meanwhile, he was considering what more could be done to bring home to drivers their responsibility to observe the rules of motorway behaviour.
Motorway Schedule
IN five years' time there should be 307 1 miles of motorway in England and Wales. Mr. Marples told the Commons that, subject to the satisfactory completion of the statutory processes, and if there were no exceptional unforeseen difficulties, he expected this total to be completed by the end of 1968.
The list included 130 miles of MI and 52+ miles of M4.
