THE rebate of extra fuel tax paid by bus com
panies since last July was "the act of grace of the highwayman who, having rifled your pocket, gives you back a few coppers to pay your bus fare home", said Lord Nugent of Guildford this week when the Lords approved the Bus Fuel Grants Bill.
However, went on Lord Nugent, beggars could not be choosers and the Opposition welcomed this small gesture to the public bus service. Commending the Bill, Baroness Phillips on behalf of the Government said that the total rebate would probably be much greater than that quoted by Lord Nugent. As soon as the Bill took effect small operators would receive the refund just as quickly as they completed the necessary forms.
