AFTER the company's chiefs had been granted a personal interview with Brig. R. J. 0. Dowse, Metropolitan Licensing Authority, last week, Home Counties Plant Hire, Ltd., Ilford, expected to receive an allocation of oil fuel sufficient to keep half of their fleet of 52 vehicles working.
Normally engaged on the distribution of newspapers and periodicals all over the country, the company used their basic ration in two weeks and were allotted a supplementary ration of 4,000 units. This represented approximately 2,667 gallons of fuel when 17,000 gallons were needed. A quarter of the fleet was laid up, but as the ration dwindled the company faced the prospect of dismissing their 100 employees and closing down.
Brig. Dowse was highly sympathetic. Mr. P. Bennett, general manager of the company told The Commercial Motor on Monday, but made it clear that longdistance work would have to be given to the railways.
The company have had to lay off 20 drivers.
