• The Environment Department, together with the Association for the Disabled, is now preparing a circular about the problems met by the disabled when using buses. Announcing this in the Commons this week, Mr Griffiths, Under Secretary, DoE, said the circular would shortly be sent to all operators and probably local authorities as well.
He rejected a suggestion that the law should be changed to ensure that lower mounting platforms were fitted on buses. So the MP who had asked for this, Sir David Renton (Tory, Huntingdonshire), suggested that new buses only should be fitted with these lower platforms.
But Mr Griffiths told him this would result in difficulties. The springing of modern buses meant that a lower platform could collide with objects on the road and might come into contact with the kerb when a bus drew in.
