IN a written decision, the Minister of Transport has refused two appeals against decisions of the West Midland Traffic Commissioners. The first appeal was on behalf of G. H. Austin and Sons Ltd. and Greatrex Motor Coaches Ltd. against the grant of a licence to Potteries Motor Traction Co. Ltd. to operate an express carriage service between Newcastle-under-Lyme and Hopton. The second appeal was by Greatrex Motor Coaches Ltd. against the Commissioners' refusal to grant Greatrex company a licence for the same service.
• The Minister felt that the principal question at issue was whether. the contract of Potteries Motor Traction Co. was fair and reasonable. Financially, the Minister felt that the appellants had not proved that the respondent's tender was uneconomic. Turning to the other aspects of the service, the Minister 'observed the suggestions made by the -appellants that the respondent wanted the licence to complete its monopoly of services to Hopton and that, once in this position, the respondent could rationalize. He could find nothing reprehensible in this.
