Single-deck Bus. 50-40 Cwt. Chassis.

STAND No. 8.

BALLA Agentd: Republic Trucks, Ltd., 31-82, Dolsover Street, London, W.1.

TRERE are two exhibits on this stand. One is a 30-40 cwt. chassis currying a 17-seater single-deck omnibus body.

The chassis is demonstrated by the "Silent Salesman," which consists of tapes leading from the various points of special interest to notices describing what these points are.

To deal with the actual exhibits, the chassis has a. four-cylindered Continental Red Seal engine of 3a in. bore and 5 in, stroke, with the cylinders east in pairs and L headed, with the valves on the near side. The crankshaft is supported in three bearings, and the big-ends are lubricated by oil under pressure and by troughs into which oil is fed by a plunger pump. Ignition is by high-tension magneto with fixed spark. To isolate the engine from damage by frame torque it is three-point suspended. Thermo syphon in water circulation is employed, the radiator being built up from four iron castings and a separate core: it is carried onithe front frame cross member by two springloaded bolts.

The gearbox, which gives three for ward speeds, and the dry multiple clutch are bolted up as a unit with the engine, the gear shifting lever and brake lever being centrally positioned. The pinions are made of heat-treated nickel alloy steel, and have a tooth width of I in. Between the gearbox and rear axle is a two-piece propeller shaft provided with three fork-and-pin type univerael joints, and supported at the middle joint by a bearing held by a frame cross member.

The rear axle is the well-known Torbensen, which has an I-beam, forged, load-carrying member, which relieves the driving portion of the axle of much of the work which it is called upon to do in other forms of axle. The first reduction is by bevels and the second by spur gears on the differential shafts meshing with internally toothed rings bolted to the wheels. The differential is the Pourlok, an interesting type in which toothed pinions are not required, and which effectually prevents the spinning of either wheel in soft ground, a difficulty which sometimes occurs when the ordinary type of differential is employed.

Both brakes -opeeate on drums bolted to the rear wheels, one having an external-contracting band and. the other beieg of the internal-expanding type. The wheels are constructed with 14 square wood spokes.

Springing has been carefully attended to, both front and rear springs being of ample dimensions and arranged so that they are self-lubricatieg.

The steering gear is of the worm and nut type, and right-hand in order to conform with English practice.

The bus thas.sis varies in a few points from that just described, the gearratios are slightly higher, the wheelbase 20 ins. less, and a one-piece cardan shaft with two universal joints is employed.

The bus body is constructed so that the driver, although completely protected, is partitioned off from the passengers. Access to the vehicle is obtained by two doers, one opening into the driver s cab and the other positioned in the partition between the driver and passengers.
