APPROVAL in principle has been given by Glasgow Corporation's planning committee to the erection of a 34--acre mechanized parcels depot for B.R.S. Parcels Ltd. on the Taylor Woodrow industrial estate at Dixon's Blazes, Glasgow. The proposed depot will be the central distributing point for the West of Scotland and will replace the depot at Portman Street, Glasgow.
Mr. J. L. Willoughby, director and general manager of B.R.S. Parcels, said recently that the present Glasgow depot was quite inadequate to handle the present volume of well over 5m. packages a year; they expected an immense improvement in the speed of delivery through use of the new depot. The latter will be on a seven-acre site, allowing for expansion, and will accommodate more than 100 vehicles and 200 trailers. It will have 150 loading/unloading bays, while a " carousel " endless conveyor belt running two-thirds of the length of the building will serve the delivery bays.
The depot will also have a warehouse of 20,000 sq. ft.—taking the place of the present B.R.S. Parcels warehouse at Airdrie Street, Glasgow. Nearly 300 people will be employed at the new depot, including office staff. A steel-frame building cad in brick and asbestos has been designed for the main parcels shed, with a steel-frame brick building for the offices.
If all goes according to plan, construction will begin after Christmas and the depot will be operating early in 1966.
