THE Shadow Transport Minister, Mr. Enoch Powell, has, as predicted, taken over the chairmanship of the Conservative back-bench transport committee. Stepping down to make way for him, the former chairman Mr. David Webster (Weston-super-Mare) has become joint vice-chairman with Mr. Victor Goodhew (St. Albans). Mr. Daniel Awdry (Chippenham) and Mr. Clive Bossorn (Leominster) are the group's hon. secretaries.
Both previous vice-chairmen, Mr. R. W. Elliott (North Newcastle) and Mr. Humphrey Atkins (Merton and Morden), have been replaced. Mr. Awdry was secretary last year and his new assistant is the son of Lord Bossom.
Mr. Webster's replacement is not a demotion. The Conservatives announced when their Shadow Ministers were appointed that this group of men and women with former government experience would probably all take charge of— and thus reinforce—the various' backbench committees. Mr. Webster, who is 41, was a very active chairman of the committee last year. He is a keen supporter of the commercial road transport cause.
