Hauliers seem to shy oi Enterprise Zones, but they've a lot to offer
AN ENTERPRISE Zone planned for the West Midlan — a 538-acre site in Dudley. E so far there have been few i quiries about it from hauliE and warehousemen, writ, JOHN DURANT.
Hauliers are having a tou time in this area and ha' enough worries concerning th( survival in the more immedia future. But this EZ developme is no long-term pie-in-the-sl idea.
Firms within Enterprise Zon, benefit from:
• Exemption from developme land tax • 100 per cent capital alio% ances (for corporation and i come tax purposes) for cor mercial and industrii buildings • Exemption from general rat( on industrial and commerci properties • Simplification of plannin procedures • Exclusion from the scope Industrial Training Boards • Speedier handling of requesi for Customs warehousing • Abolition of any remaining n quirements for industrial di velopment certificates.
The benefits of the Zones w run for at least ten years.

Dudley Council was initiall swamped with phone inquirie —but not from operators. Al long ago as last August, CM r( ported that hauliers were shov, ing little signs of interest in EZ generally. Are there particula problems in them setting up i EZs? According to the Depart ment of the Environment, ther are not.
They will be subject to health safety and pollution regulation but a spokesman told CM: "Any body in commerce can apply t( move in, and hauliers shoul( keep their ears to the ground tc see what they can gain."
Other EZs are being planne( in Newcastle/Gateshead; Sal ford/Trafford; Corby; Lowe Swansea Valley; Isle of Dogs London; Speke, Liverpool Hartlepool; Wakefield; Clyde bank, Glasgow; and Belfast.
