MOONDROP all-night lorry deliveries could become a feature of the 1980s, according to the Freight Transport Association's Richard Turner.
He told the joint CPDM/ GLC conference in London this week that increased pressures on road transport could give a boost to innovation and productivity.
He suggested that, after 12 years' operating experience, the Moondrop overnight urban delivery service might now be more appropriate.
It fell down before because it was ahead of its time, but many companies have grown more familiar with it. It might first appear in London and the provincial conurbations. Mr Turner painted a picture in which rapid inflation — ahead of the general level — would force road transport to make more use of its equipment. Stockless depots and pre-loaded demountable vehicles were two tools for the coming years.
He said there would also be far more environmental controls on lorries in future. Reductions in public expenditure will be matched by an increase in the number of lowcost amenity schemes.
