UNDER Secretary for Transport Kenneth Clarke has announced in the House of Commons that he has no intention of approving more than the 450 planned tachograph calibration centres.
But a number of modestly equipped stations will supplement the network in areas of very low vehicle population such as North Scotland, South west England and West Wales. There are no statutory penalties for unauthorised fitting at present and Mr Clarke would prefer to avoid introducing any if possible. The situation is, he said, being kept under review. Unauthorised fitments can lead to complications when presenting tachographs for calibration, concluded Mr Clarke.
Leading tachograph manufacturers VeederRoot and Lucas Kienzle say that the 450 centres will be adequate. Lucas Kienzle says that there are plenty of fitters to cope with the work at most centres and at several they have more than the minimum legal-requirement.
