" IFwe were permitted to continue in freedom, road and rail could provide for this country the best transport system in the world," declared Mr. Denis Derham, chairman of the East Midland Area of the Road Haulage Association, at a luncheon in Nottingham, on May 23.
During the crisis of last winter, he said, the Association mustered approximately 500 vehicles which transported over 75,000 tons of open-cast coal a week. , The Association, by becoming the spearhead of the attack against the Transport Bill, had excited the admiration of traders throughout the country, said Mr. S. C. Bond, chairman of the Fast 'Midland Area of the Traders' Road Transport -Association.
Mr. J. W. Fletcher, East Midland Licensing Authority, mentioned that the Minister of Agriculture had written to the Minister of Transport, praising the great work of road transport during the severe weather.
Officials of the Association were told by Mr. M. F. Horner, road haulage officer for the Midland Division, that "there could be no greater fallacy than to assume that, if proposals now under consideration were carried out, organizations such as yours would no longer be required."
