NAORE stolen vehicles in the Metro1V1 politan police area ar'e being recovered by the Road Haulage Association's Observer Corps. Mr.]. T. Brown, chairman of the R.H.A. vehicles security committee, announced on Monday that from January 1 to May 23 this year 297 vehicles were reported to the Corps as stolen.
They found 14 of them. Four were empty and 10 were either fully or partly loaded.
More vehicles continue to he stolen north of the Thames than south of it. Moreover, nearly half of the vehicles stolen were light vans owned by small traders. More thefts occur between 5 p.m. and 6 a.m, than at any other time of the day. It was reported to Monday's meeting of the vehicles security committee that, apart from wines, spirits and cigarettes (which are always popular with thieves), there had recently been a spate of thefts of clothing, textiles, groceries and television sets in transit.
The importance of checking the credentials of new drivers was emphasized. A case was reported of the theft of a vehicle carrying a load worth £5,000, which was being driven by a man who had been taken on only the previous day without any check on his record.
It was stated also that the Ministry of Transport was concerned about an increase in the theft of vehicle registration books. Owners were urged to take greater care of them.
