• Support which the vehicle security committee of the Road Haulage Association is giving to the "Lock up London" campaign by the Metropolitan Police includes meetings for groups of the Vehicle Observer Corps set up in London. Meetings already arranged, all at 7 p.m., are at Ladywell Baths, Lewisham High St, on October 16: City Road Police Station, on October 22; and Tooting Police Station. on October 29.
At a Press conference on the day before the start of the campaign it was stated that 331 lorries with £2m worth of goods were stolen or highjacked in 1968 and that the figures for 1969 up to the present time were 226 vehicles and £900,000 worth of goods. The police spokesman pointed out that while spirits and cigarettes were the most vulnerable goods by far the most value was represented by non-ferrous metals, clothing and foodstuffs. He cited the case of the theft of a lorry carrying meat-extract cubes and wondered what anyone would do with e20,000 worth of OX0s.
