HIGHWAY authorities are being asked by the Minister of Transport to 6o-operate with him in a drive to free toll roads and bridges. He is taking active steps to eliminate those on trunk roads for which he is responsible.' He points out that this move is
• a highway improvement which can well be undertaken now, as it involves little or no labour or materials, whilst increasing considerably the convenience of communications.
There now remain only four bridges subject to toll on trunk roads. These are at Conway, Selby, Durham and Old Shoreham. The toll also applies to one length of trunk road, the Port Madoc-• Minffordd embankment between Caernarvon and Merionethshire.
There are in all 58 toll bridges and 41 lengths of toll road. The Minister is generally prepared to make grants for this purpose at the normal rates of 75, 60 or 50 per cent., according to the classification of the road or bridge.
