ALTHOUGH the figures relating to the registrations of new vehicles are not now officially issued by the Ministry of Transport, owing to the war, the S.M.M. and T. has circulated statistics for August and September, 1939, which serve as an approximate guide.

For the former month they show that 4,828 goods vehicles were registered, contrasted with 4,399 in August, 1938, the number of hackney vehicles being 473 and 438, respectively, for the two periods. Government-owned vehicles registered numbered 2,609.

So far as September is concerned, 5,301 goods vehicles were registered, contrasted with 3,931 and, as might be expected, the number of hackneys fell appreciably, the September, 1939, total being 193, contrasted with 498 a year earlier, Government-owned vehicles registered numbered 1,474,
