PATENT No. 873,348 deals with bellows units employed in air-suspension systems. It shows an improved design which eliminates the need for expensive steel wires for reinforcement. (Dunlop Rubber Co., Ltd., 1 Albany Street, London, N.W.I.)
The drawing shows a bellows clamped between the axle and frame. At each end there is a bead consisting of the main cord fabric wrapped around a hard • B36 rubber core (I). This is firm enough to be non-extensible but not brittle enough to fracture. A Shore Hardness figure of 90-95 is said to be suitable.
In the middle of the bellows is a constricting ring (2) which prevents sharpcornered folding and consequent fracture. The connection (3) leads to the heightresponsive air-control valve.
