patent No. 872,678 is claimed to enable an engine to be run on mixtures leaner than usual and at the same time give a higher efficiency. (S. A. Andre Citroen, 117-167 Quai de Javel, Paris.) The drawing is a diagrararneie view of what occurs inside the cylinder. The cylinder head includes a turbulence chamber (1) in the top of which is the exhaust valve (2). The induction pipe (3) is made large, regular and smooth so that as little turbulence as possible is created.
Fuel is sprayed continuously from the nozzle (4) when the engine is running. While the inlet valve is shut, the fuel accumulates on the valve head, but at the moment of opening it is rapidly drawn into the cylinder and distributed in the form of the dark-shaded portion (5). Following this, a leaner region (6) is formed as the valve opens, whilst a third cloud (7) consists almost entirely of air.
Upon the compression stroke, the composite layers are forced into the turbulence chamber and thoroughly intermixed before being ignited by the sparking plug (8).
