THE formation of a committee to examine the licensing system was supported by the West Midland Licensing Authority, Mr. J. Else, last week at the annual dinner of the West Midland Division of the Traders Road Transport Association. It was time, said Mr. Else, that such a committee was established.
An unfavourable comparison of industrial progress in this country and the developments on the Continent was drawn by the chairman of the division, Mr. E. A. Betteley, with particular reference to road rebuilding programmes and other projects in Italy.
Mr. Betteley contended that this country was lagging behind the Continent, but he paid tribute to the British Government for implementing road construction plans in the face of threats of inflation. Building better roads, he believed, would help to combat inflation.
Mr. K. C. Turner, president, emphasized that the association was not interested in furthering the use of C-licensed vehicles. To ensure that trade and industry were free to choose their own form of transport remained the association's chief objective.
