THE Minister of Transport, Mr. Ernest Marples, proposes to lay before Parliament early in its new session an Order reducing from 10 years to seven years the age limit of vehicles subject to the compulsory test.
If the Order is approved it will not be legal to use on the roads after December 31 any vehicle over seven years old to which the Motor Vehicles (Test) Regulations 1960 apply, unless a current test certificate covering that vehicle is in force.
The classes of vehicle affected by the regulations are, broadly, all motor cycles, private cars, hackney carriages with less than eight passenger seats, dual purpose vehicles up to 2 tons unladen weight and goods vehicles up to 30 cwt. unladen weight.
It is not at present necessary to produce a test certificate with an application for a vehicle excise licence. The date from which this requirement will apply will be announced later.
