TRANSPORT operators in South L Africa are said to be obtaining better service from tyres by filling them with nitrogen instead of air. The gas is stored in cylinders at 1,980 p.s.i. One reason is that the oxygen in air-filled tyres is deleterious to rubber. Another is that there are no traces of oil—which also attacks rubber—in gas from a cylinder, whilst a third is that nitrogen-filled tyres are legs sensitive to temperature changes, pressures in heavy-duty tyres being said to rise only 2 p.s.i. on a very hot day.
A South African firm is now marketing nitrogen tyre-filling equipment to farmers and other operators of transport vehicles who cannot conveniently use compressors. to inflate tyres.
