• The Department of the Environment has taken further steps to improve the safety of automatic half-barrier level crossings. Where it has not yet been possible to eliminate all unevenness which might result in "grounding" — mainly on AHB crossings on minor or unclassified roads — warning signs, "Uneven Crossing: Risk of Grounding”, have been erected at road Junctions leading to all these crossings. Drivers of long vehicles with low ground clearance, such as "low-loaders", are particularly warned against trying to use any crossings with this type of warning sign unless they are quite sure that there is no risk of "grounding". If in any doubt, they are advised to get in touch with the signalman from the telephone provided.
In addition. the Department has prepared a provisional list of 38 crossings with sub-standard surfaces and this list is being circulated to all road user organizations likely to be concerned, including operators of vehicles carrying abnormal indivisible large loads.
