drivers to 'fight Docks Bill
MEMBERS of the RHA are being urged to mobilise drivers in a campaign against the controversial Dock Work Regulation Bill, scheduled to have its second reading later this month.
The Association is advising the display of a special notice to drivers and other staff on the following lines. It reads : "The docker, like any transport worker, is entitled to a square deal and to the same rights as the rest of us.
" But is he entitled to impose his special powers and privileges in places far removed from the docks? Is he entitled to say 'move over, mate,' at warehouses and freight depots where other transport workers have been doing a good job for many years?
"Should he be able to bring the rest of us to a standstill by a ' docker ' dispute miles away from a ship?
"Have a good look at the proposals now before Parliament decides to extend the employment of dockers into areas where they have never been involved.
"Tell your union branch now what you think of it! Tell your MP now what he should do about it! Before its too late! "
The RHA is calling on members to lobby their MPs and also wants hauliers directly affected to send suggestions for amendments to the Bill to their area secretaries.
