The manager of a dairy states that the present fleet consistv of electric vehicles, hat the firm is now considering operating a 3-tonner, with either petrol or oil engine for dairy-to-depot work. Ile asks for respective operating costs at 200, 400 and 600 miles a week, together with some indication of the platform space available.
Dealing first with the petrol-engined vehicle, and assuming an adult driver, standing costs per week for the basic 42 hours are estimated at E14 Ss. 4d., whilst the addition of running costs gives a total operating cost per mile of 26.46d. at 200 miles a week, 16.45d. at 400 miles a week, and 13.29d. at 600 miles.
When fitted with oil engine the corresponding standing costs would amount to £15 2s. Id., with operating costs per mile of 25.26d., 15-44d. and 12.26d. at 200, 400 and 600 miles a week respectively.

Regarding platform space, this can obviously vary, Taking a popular make, the length of the platform of a 3-ton truck could vary from 11 ft. 6 in. to 14 ft. with a width in both cases of 7 ft.
