to performances of typical eight" wheelers, which appeared on page 54 of your issue of February 28, made clear, the Atkinson with LX engine was tested in December, 1959. We have subsequently confirmed from one of our major operators of something over 100 Atkinson/Gardner units, many of them LXengined, that the average consumption at 24 tons g.v.w. is, with normal throttle opening and trunk operation, 12,16 m.p.g., as against the 8-9 m.p.g. which your article implies. Our figure can, I know, be supported by innumerable operators of our vehicles--in fact, our main platform (if any platform were necessary, and our order book seems to imply that it is not) is economy of operation. During the past few months one operator of 20 similar vehicles confirmed that over the past year he had saved £11,000 in fuel as compared with other makes of vehicle, on 20 eightwheel chassis under identical operating conditions.
