THE Government is trying to persuade some EFTA countries to remove duties on imported vehicles which are not "consonant with the spirit of the Stockholrns Convention". Announcing this in the Commons last week, Mr. Douglas Jay, President of the Board of Trade, said "We shalt continue to pursue this issue as opportunity offers ".
Mr, Jay pointed out that Portugal would apply the same reduced rates of duty to "completely knocked down"
vehicles as she now applied to assembled vehicles. Other EFTA countries had implemented their obligations under the Convention in this field, but some had retained revenue duties which had tic protective effect.
Replying to a series of questions frorn Midlands MPs, Mr. Jay made special mention of Norway, Portugal, Switzer land and Finland as countries where duties were being retained at the preseir time,
