Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A Successful Municipal Fleet, to which Considerable Additions Have neett Made During the Corporation's Past Financial Year.

AQOMPARATIVE synopsis of the working of the fleet of motorbuses owned by the Cardiff City Council for the year ended March 31st last has recently been issued. In comparison with the figures for the previous year it shows a lower gross and net profit, but only to. such an extent as may be accounted for by the increased sphere of operation of the vehicles and the higher capital charges consequent on the expansion of the municipal fleet of buses from 23 to 36 vehicles.

The net profit on the vehicles for the past year is returned at £5,546 (this sum has been carried to the appropria tion account), the gross profit amounting to £11,707, as compared with £18,338 in the previous year. The traffic revenue from the buses was £63,078, as against £42,455 a. year earlier, the receipts per bus-mile being 15.794. in the year ended March 31st last and 17.44. in the preceding 12 months. Although the receipts per busmile show a slight falling off it is satiafactory to note that the all-in cost of operation per bus-mile has been lowered to a proportionate extent, the figure for 1925 being 14.541 as against 16.25d. in 1924.

• The total mileage covered by the buses in the year was 958,520432,024 miles more than in the previous year, and 5,106,286 passengers were carried by the vehicles, as against 3.401,646 passengers in the year ended Irlareh, 1924.

The report is accounted' satisfactory from all points of view. The earning of a substantial profit is gratifying in Itself, but the considerable additions made to the fleet of the corporation and the increased mileage covered by the buses must also be considered noteworthy and indicative Of the value of the services to the public.

Further extensions of the routes at present traversed by corporation buses are contemplated, application. having been made to the Ministry of Transport for authority to ply via Peterstone, Marshfield, St. Bride's and Wentloog to Ebbw Bridge on the boundaries of Newport. It is intended to cater for villages south of the main road between the two towns.
