RRITAIN's first port pallet pool was opened in Manchester on Wednesday and enables a haulier delivering palletized goods to Manchester docks to surrender his loaded pallets and immediately pick up an equal number of empty ones as he leaves. Announcing the scheme, Mr. W. G. Edmonds, the port's managing director, said pallet utilization would be increased and firms that had hesitated about investing in pallets would find their outlay greatly reduced.
Customers, he said, would simply indicate on their shipping notes that they wished to participate in the pool and would employ pallets of any one of three standard sizes: 72 in. by 48 in., 48 in. by 40 in. or 48 in. by 32 in. A driver delivering loaded pallets would get a special note entitling him to recover the same number and type of pallets from the pool.
BRS divisional traffic superintendent Mr. G. Watson commented that the scheme would help road transport operators to achieve greater productivity. Mr. W. Famorth, North Western (Eastern) area secretary of the RHA, said the pool would undoubtedly speed turn-round and ease congestion.
