A STUDY group to devise plans to deal rA with traffic problems 25 years hence is to be set up by Mr. Ernest Marples, Minister of Transport. He will shortly announce its membership and terms of reference.
He said last week, on his return from a study of traffic problems on the Continent, that the design of towns, buildings, bridges and roads would depend on longterm solutions affecting many Government departments apart from the Ministry of Transport.
The short-term solution of the parking problem, he said, was stricter enforcement. In the long term it might be necessary to have electronic computers to regulate the flow of traffic into the bigger cities. Cars might have to be prevented from entering because the centre was already congested. He was to watch such a system in operation in Baltimore.
