road signs are expected to be in use in Britain soon. Mr. Marples will announce in the next few weeks the details of a ES m. scheme to bring our traffic directions and signposts more into line with those on the Continent.
The emphasis will be on standardization and simplification. Phrases like "road liable to subsidence" or "temporary road surface" will be replaced by snappy little pictures leaving the impending danger in no doubt.
Other directions and signposts will be modelled on motorway signs, which are considered to have been highly successful.
It is expected that local authorities will be asked to replace existing signs with the new ones as and when convenient.
