From a special correspondent
D ISCUSSIONS started this week between the
GPO and the Union of Post Office Workers about a possible experimental postal bus service to carry mail and passengers in Montgomeryshire to ease local public transport problems.
Although no information was available from official Post Office sources, I understand that the plan is to operate between Llanidloef and Llangurig along a 4+-mile route carrying several passengers for five days a week. The driver would collect the fares and deliver mail to subpost offices. At present the route is served by a Saturdays-only service.
There is no indication of the type of vehicle that might be used but it is thought that something like the type operating on similar services in Scotland might be envisaged.
The mail bus is one of several suggestions being discussed by a Ministry of Transport working party after earlier surveys of the problem in the county.
The GPO and the union are discussing wages for the postman who would drive the bus and a timetable that would meet both passenger and Royal Mail requirements. I understand members of the union locally unofficially welcome the plan.
