THE Government is believed to be 1 planning a big inquiry into the problems of rural transport and the difficulties operators are facing, writes our political correspondent. The inquiry will take in several Government departments and theMinisters concerned have already held a preliminary meeting. Conservative M.P.s consider that an announcement about the inquiry is likely
quite soon—it may well come in the " Chancellor's Budget speech.
The inquiry, it is believed, will take into account such points as the operation of rural transport services with fewer vehicles, the concentration of school buses, and the idea of multi-purpose vehicles for very small and remote areas.
It will also consider carefully the economic difficulties of the rural operators.
Speculation about an inquiry follows a meeting between Conservative lvl.P.s and Mr. Heathcote Amory in his room at the House of Commons. The M.P.s came away feeling more optimistic about the Government's attitude towards rural transport problems than for a long time past. Some action, they consider, is on the way.
