F Bristol Commercial Vehicles, Ltd., is not allowed to compete on the open market then other manufacturers should not be allowed to supply nationalized operators. At present the Scottish Companies, who arc allowed Bristols, also buy other makes, while London Transport hasn't one Bristol in its huge fleet. British Road Services also continue to buy large numbers of other makes in addition to their purchases of Bristols.
If the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders feels that the manufacture of goods or passenger vehicles by nationalized companies should be for the use of the State transport system's own purposes alone, then the State should order Bristols alone. Taxpayers Would appreciate the economies possible with a standardized make (Bristol) for the States transport needs from mail vans to tank transporters.
It is nonsense for the S.M.M.T. to say that " any losses for private enterprise in the home market could lead to adverse effects on exports—something State concerns do not engage in" when nationalized concerns like Fiat and Renault export in vast quantities.
