AFACTORYhas been built by rockhouse Engineering, Ltd., West Bromwich, for the manufacture of torque-converter transmission systems of various types.. The company'sr10/14 unit, chiefly intended for industrial tractors, has been fitted to a mobile shovel and on test, because of the easier control, the appliance performed, in 4 minutes, work for which a conventional type needed 7 minutes.
Moreover, the driver did not need to rest after an hour's work because of physical strain. The 10/14 unit is suitable for engines with a torc(ue rating of up to 200 lb.-ft. It comprises a torqueconverter coupling and a series of oiloperated epicyclic gear trains.
Two brake bands and a multi-plate clutch are used for the engagement of the highand low-range trains, and for the reverse ratio, oil being supplied from a sump by an inbuilt pump. The high range gives a 1:1 drive and the low range a 2.8:1 reduction. The reverse ratio is 2:1. A change from one range to another can be made at full torque.
The converter is sof the single-stage type and incorporates a free-wheel reaction member claimed to increase light-load efficiency to 90 per ceht. Maximum stalling torque represents a conversion of 3:1. Larger units can be supplied to meet specifications.
